found the problem.. a simple one but without ANY documentation it's an easy one to make. The battery was in upside down! I didn't realize it until I finally ran across a post where someone with the same initial problem made note and actually showed a photo of the correct orientation. I double checked the box that the controller came in and besides the fancy cloth bag NO PAPAER instructions at all!..
