Solution: Volume Knob

I love my DUDU7, but I'm surprised how much I missed a volume knob. I ordered one of these:

It was perfectly plug and play into a USB on the DUDU7. I drilled a small hole (slightly larger than 0.25 inches) into the plastic mounting kit. Great option!

Does it work right out of the box?? Plug n play?? No additional programming involved. I’ve been looking for something like this for my 13 inch Dudu 7 and hate relying on the steering wheel controls to turn down the volume. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Soto do you have video of how this works? can you customize each button what app to open? for example button 1 open 360 app etc

I'm happy to say that this $10 volume knob definitely works with the DUDU7! Just hook it up to one of the USB connections, and it's plug-and-play. In addition to turning it left/right for volume up/down, you can also click it like a big button to mute/unmute, and if you hold it down for 2 seconds you can toggle the color-changing LED ring on/off. I'm now running into a problem after using this for a bit. If I boot up my DUDU7 with the volume knob connected but not a phone, the volume knob works immediately, but Apple Carplay will not connect. If I boot up my DUDU7 with my phone connected by USB, then Carplay will work, but the volume knob won't work. Any idea what's going on?

hizzledizzlemizzle Oh wow, that doesn't sound good at all! I never connect my phone via USB, so I don't have any insight. I was under the impression that the volume knob basically acts like a very limited USB keyboard, but I could be wrong. Hope you find a solution! (I wonder if this is enough to justify a separate thread so that maybe someone knowledgeable will see it.)

niftyken @DUDU-Meng could you ask devs what's going on? Same happens if I connect esp32 which doesn't have USB HID support, just a chip for USB-serial. Dudu thinks device with carplay has been connected. The only workaround is switch Dudu usb to NONE, but it blocks any device on any usb port for starting wired carplay.

Mikescotland Thanks for the added details. This is certainly an unfortunate side effect! So does this happen every time (but maybe doesn't get noticed immediately), or do these circumstances only come up sometimes / randomly?

niftyken every time but haven't pinpoint it to devices. Esp causes it, usb drive or HDD doesn't, looks like HID device also causes it.
I turned off the usb wired carplay but it's a workaround as no wired carplay then.
We couldn't figure out with devs here why out of nowhere carplay started to pop in every time I turn on the HU, later I discovered what was it. Fair enough, usb to serial chip could do it but HID device shouldn't trigger / block wired carplay.

Wireless CarPlay does not affect USB connections.
Wired CarPlay will monopolize the USB port, causing other USB devices to disconnect. This has always been the case.

DUDU-Meng that's not the issue.
Issue: some devices like HID or esp32 causing dudu7 to automatically start carlink app on wake up or when device is connected. While storage devices do not start carlink app.

That is how Android (but actually the underlying linux) does it. If a mass storage device is detected, it will immediately be taken over by autofs and couple it with the right file system (kernel) driver and present it as a drive (when supported).
I assume that carlink will treat every "chip driven device" as an intelligent device, be it Android (Android Auto) or iPhone (Carplay), even if it is not an Android or iPhone. I really think carlink is the issue here.

surfer63 you're probably very right that carlink app is the problem. But Dudu devs should contact carlink devs then..
