1) That is because I use the media player. I never listen to BT music and had not realized this at all. It must be possible as navigation apps do the same, but currently I have not looked into it.
2) I will build a switch in Settings "Start service on opening the app". I can't start it from boot as that would require my app to be a system app, which is not possible. I did not check if it can be automatically opened by one of DUDU's methods to start an app on boot.

1) Switched from mediaplayer to soundpool. This should not interfere at all with any (BT) music and is specifically for "short sounds".
2) Switch added. This was super simple. All logic for the service is already there. Only a new switch to check on startup whether to start the service or not.

I will test today and probably release this afternoon/evening.

Switch from LocationManager and LocationListener (Android 13 and down) to Android 14+ FusedLocationProviderClient.
Add country speedlimit fallbacks for a number of countries. Currently: NL, BE, DE, FR, GB, DK, RU, PL, UA, IL, NO, SE, IT, ES, PT, US (in general, no state specifics), VN, KR, JP, TR, BR, AU, CA, IE, CN, IN, TW. This will use the country defaults when the road has no speed limit tag. As this is a "data source code" file, your country can easily be added when it is missing.

In version 1.5, I switched from locationmanager to FusedLocationProviderClient, which is supposed to be the way forward on Android 14/15/16, but it gives away a lot of control.

If Android "thinks" you do not need GPS, you do not get GPS.
If Android "thinks" that WiFi/cell (A-GPS) location is good enough, you don't get GPS.
And you need to very strictly use "ignore battery optimization".

In these cases you see "no GPS" or very bad accuracy.

Locationmanager uses only GPS (GNSS) and is faster. Only in cities with high buildings, FusedLocationProviderClient can combine a bad GPS signal with a not so accurate GPS/cell signal and thereby improve the position.

So I switched back to locationmanager that will continue to function till Android 17, with fallback to FusedLocationProviderClient if for some reason the locationmanager functionality does not deliver a valid GPS signal.

I got a very good question from a user: "How much data does your app actually use?"

I had not thought about it, but my app uses internet to get speed limits for the roads.
So how much data does it actually use?
It is around 2–4 MB per hour of driving, which is very low (if you ask me). (Google maps: 3-10 MB/hour; Spotify 50-150 MB/hour depending on quality)
Kilometers are not relevant as it asks every 4 seconds. What I could do to optimize it further, is to only request data "if moved more than x meters". It's useless to request data if you drive in a city and spend 10-200 seconds in front of a red traffic light, again and again.

surfer63 I'd think about grid caching, grids like 10-20m cached, so it refreshes every week or so. Also reduces API requests.
Also, a graphical overlay showing red circle sign with permitted speed without GPS speed (like normal modern cars have) and without anything else would be great.

I am looking into alternatives:

Make (compressed) sqlite databases per country with only speedlimits per grid (I already tried NL: 60MB; Belgium 20MB; France: 93 MB; DE: 173 MB to see/check for sizes). In that case I want to make a python script/executable which every user can run on his/her PC for his/her country and update once a month or less. I am certainly not going to do that worldwide.
Or indeed caching the grid.
And indeed the red circle. (as "switch" option)

Many ideas and as long as the weather is cold and wet, it is OK.
Tomorrow probably another V1.7, but not with above ideas (yet).

Hello. The tolerance for exceeding the speed limit is 5 or 10 percent. However, in Germany, the permissible limit is 3 percent, so exceeding it by 5 percent results in a fine. Could you please introduce a third value of 0%? That would be desirable.

The default is 10% or 5 real kilomters. Did you check the Settings?
The tolerance can both be set as percentage and as real kilometers.
The percentage can be set per 1%, so you can select 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 13%, up to 30%. Whatever you like. Already since version 1.0 there are no fixed percentages.

Aber es stimmt. Die meisten neuen Fahrzeuge quaken sofort los, wenn man schon 1kmh schneller als erlaubt fährt. Da wäre eine 0% Einstellung sinnvoll.

Currently the app simply measures every 4 seconds. In this version added options to influence the performance:
- Minimum Distance option (currently : 0m, 10m, 25m, 50m
- Interval: 2 seconds (4–8 MB/hour), 4 seconds (2–4 MB/hour), 8 seconds (1–2 MB/hour)
When you select "Start service on opening app", you now have a second switch to minimize the app (after starting the service).
Add a "checkForNewVersion" at startup with a dialog: "A newer version X.Y is available. Open download page?" (Of course this will only start working as of next release)
Add Portuguese, Korean, simplified Chinese (China) and tradional Chinese (Taiwan) language.

This app has great potential, but I just can't get it to work correctly here in the UK

I've tried the last few versions of this app (now using V1.7) but it has the speed limit display in the wrong units/number combination.

My test zone is in a 30mph limit. If I leave the "mph instead of km/h for GPS speed" option switched off I get "Limit 30 km/h" but if I check the box to get mph I get "Limit 18 mph".

So it still seems to still be unnecessarily converting the base speed limit from the map data if you choose mph. I thought this has been fixed in the newer versions, so wondered if there is something wrong in my units settings somewhere?

EDIT. Looking at the logs it seems it can't get a valid speed limit.

I have done a test speed-limit lookup for 50.72, -3.46 which is the M5 near me and get this in the logs.

This is really strange. There is no conversion unless the app thinks you are not in an mph country. I would like to see the logs of that drive as well.

No, this is not the M5. This is too far next to the M5. I did a check in OpenStreetMap and in Google Maps and it is not close enough to the M5.

Hi!
For me, after exceeding the speed limit and receiving a notification, music from the radio, VLC player, AIMP, or a USB flash drive stops playing and needs to be manually restarted. Harry, please understand that I'm not the only one with this problem; the friends I've asked about it also have the same problem. The problem occurs in versions 1.5, 1.6, and 1.7. My platform is DUDU7 v 260131 8 RAM/256 ROM.
