A gplay driven update restored the original gmaps app on my Dudu7 after a month or so. So be it. While the drive mode alternative had a cleaner look, it lacked functionality. Now I can again use Gemini to control gmaps. Also, only the original gmaps shows the speed alongside the speed limit. Most importantly, overlay maps work only on the original gmaps - and I use one for HVO filling stations.
