I can't enlighten you on any of your queries, and I'm kinda guessing you already know this, but in case you don't...
Although we hear and appreciate bass, people/anatomy lack ability to locate and tune in to bass source. We can hear/focus/hone in on most frequencies and waves as the compliment or cancel which gives us depth, stage width blah blah but not so much with bass.
That's why subs in the house, car etc don't need to be (mostly, unless the person is a complete symmetrical audiophile that requires a pair of subs) placed between the speakers and can simply be positioned wherever suits/compliments the overall sound best and/or keeping the sub tucked away or being unobtrusive. In most cases only one sub is required.
So you're right, the bass quantity/volume shouldn't be changing as you adjust the stage focus etc.
