Record from rear camera while driving

New to DUDU7 here - fancy it so far! 🙂 I ride with a Garmin Tandem Dashcam, which records directly on a MicroSD when powered on with vehicle, and overwrites oldest recordings when running out for space. This for security measures.

I've tried to connect a USB stick to the USB female connectors of the DUDU7 and setup the recording but.. first of all I can only set it to 3 mins recording, and second I can not find any options in Task to trigger when system starts to start recording.

Any hints here?

Sorry, I'm afraid I don't quite understand.
Are you referring to the built-in front and rear dual-recording dashcam feature of DUDU7? If it's this app, simply insert the USB drive and select the recording device in the dashcam settings. It will start recording automatically upon startup.

Yes, I have connected a reverse camera, which I activate with both reverse gear as well as a physical button. This works.

Are you saying, that simply inserting a USB drive and selecting that for recordings in the settings, will make the unit record nonstop while ignition is on? If so, what will happen when USB drive is full?

Auto-recording operates in a loop. When storage nears capacity, it automatically deletes the earliest recorded files to make space, so you needn't worry.
However, for use as a recording drive, you should employ a USB drive with fast write speeds. This drive should be dedicated solely to video recording; storing other files on it is not recommended.

DUDU-Meng Thanks. However, it doesn't record at the moment while driving even though USB device is attached and settings as screenshot shows are made. No new files are generated and saved on the USB device. Any suggestions? Secondly, what does the Recording Time setting mean?

Recording time refers to the duration of each recorded video, which will be split into multiple files.

Thanks. Despite my settings do you then have any suggestion on why nothing is recorded? Apart from make the settings the screenshot shows, do I need to activate something else?

bodudek You must set Dashcam app to be opened at startup. Or you can make a task in the More features section:
Trigger condition: Vehicle Ignition
Delay: 2-3 seconds
Action to be performed: open app
App to be opened Dashcam.

I've set up the trigger, at the dashcam app opens. But no recordings are being made. What am I missing?

bodudek Maybe the USB drive is at fault? Have you tried another USB drive? It is better to use some well known brands. I really don't know. I have an 128 SanDisk Ultra.

Maybe. But I do have an old manually made recording. Can you confirm, that the Dashcam App should just be started. No other action needed, right?

bodudek For me it works exactly like this. I have dashcam to be open 2-3 seconds after Vehicle ignition. If you open the app the recording (red dot blinking) should start automatically.

If I open the Dashcam App manually or triggered then it does NOT record automatically. Weird. Not sure what setting I am missing here :/

bodudek First of all, have you tried to change the USB Drive? If you have a manually made recording this doesn't mean that the USB drive is not failing. It happened to me too. And another thing. I don't see anywhere in your above posts what system version you have. Another thing that you can try is clearing the cache of the dashcam App and trying to format the USB from the app itself.

Does this USB drive have two partitions? Did you select the second hidden partition?
Please try using a different USB drive for testing.

I have to re-ask, sorry, but when you start the Dashcam App without doing anything else, does it start recording immediately then? I do NOT have a front camera but only a rear camera. When I start the Dashcam App, then the front camera is started, but as there is no camera, then only a black screen is shown. It does NOT start recording automatically. If I start recording manually, then it can record on the USB drive immediately.

Your earlier question: The dashcam doesn't start recording only when you turn it on. It records continuously even when powered on but not manually activated.
Do not remove the USB drive used for recording during normal operation.
We recommend setting the recording duration to 1 minute. With a 5-minute setting, any video loss due to sudden power outages or similar issues will result in a 5-minute gap in your footage.

I understand, that I must open the Dashcam App, and then recording should start. It doesn't. There's no difference whether I open the Dashcam App triggered or manually. It does not start recording just by opening the Dashcam App. Should it?

The USB drive has been selected and it contains only 1 partition. If I open the Dashcam App and manually push the record button, then it starts recording, and the saving is properly done to this USB drive.

Okay, I understand.
Which firmware version are you currently using?
If it's outdated, try updating to the latest version. I tested the new version here and it works fine—it records in the background even when not opened.

I'm with DUDU OS 20250905. I suppose it's the newest?
Is there a way to trigger a tap on the record button?

bodudek No, it is not. 250905 is the last "public" (stable) version. There are beta versions. And the last one is 251104. You can find it here
In order to get it you must install it through the classic method. Download the archive, extract it to a PC hard drive, copy the files (not the folder) to the root of a USB drive and insert the USB drive in one of the USB ports connected to the DUDU device. The USB drive must be FAT32 formatted. A message that "an update is available" should appear. Do not extract the USB drive during the update, you'll get a green color message that it will tell you "please extract the USB drive" or something like that. After the successful update, you can enable Beta App Access and Auto Check for updates in the Settings/More features/Appstore so you can get updates through OTA.
