JhonnyD no, you could adjust brightness to zero. Blank screen. Without using the overlay "extreme mode". Some people set zero and had problems because they couldn't see anything to bring brightness back. So instead of letting people not to have zero but for instance 1 in the display driver settings, they restricted it to 10 in the 3.6E which is bright as hell.
It could have been solved much better by a dialogue when you select PWM max low value in the menu, Dudu changes it and asks after change if that's fine. But if you don't confirm, reverts to previous value.

JhonnyD @DUDU-Meng I have measured the backlight for my 9.5 screen. Constant current driver with 19-21V output. PWM @ 390Hz from the MCU in 3.6E is set to minimum 17% duty cycle (it's setting 10 in the advanced brightness control, can't get lower due to DUDU software). I have simulated with ESP32 duty cycle with 390Hz and the screen and driver are happy with just 2-5% duty cycle which resolves any nighttime problems with bright screen. I think DUDU you should really bring back the advanced settings to be possible to lower to 1 (not to 0 as that would prevent people seeing complete darkness).
Now, the flashing black that is encountered in some screens, maybe due to a SY7200 LED driver IC. I can see on the oscilloscope it's 390 Hz PWM while the manufacturer as per their data sheet says min 20kHz PWM should be used. Not sure if you can set the PWM frequency in the driver but something to pass to the dev team.

DUDU-Meng No, ultra dark mode does not work well - it reduces contrast but it still has backlight bleed so it is difficult to read and see, especially as the fonts are too small and can't be made larger.

@Mikescotland is correct. It needs much better contrast while in a darker mode.

Mikescotland I just installed this HU and did the same things you did but it was still too bright at night. It literally blinds you especially when making hard turns onto streets or parking lots. When I was setting up my Android Auto on my phone I lowered the brightness on my phone since it was too bright for night driving. When I did that I was surprised that it also darkened the screen on the HU. Took the car for a test drive at night and it was many times better and no glare. So you may want to try lowering the brightness on your phone and see if that works. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S20 android OS. It seems that the lowered brightness worked even when I wasn't using Android Auto. I don't use Carplay so I don't know if this solution will work for it but if you have it I think it would be worth a try. Good Luck!

I don't use android auto or carplay (99% of the time).
There isn't any way as far as I know that phone brightness is signalled to the headunit (tested it and phone brightness has no impact on DUDU brightness, as expected. Samsung s23 ultra).
Issue is with display driver and DuduOS that doesn't allow PWM for backlight to go below 17% duty cycle.
What you're experiencing it is probably another bug which I noticed. Sometimes after switching to day mode, even if this shows 100%, screen is far below it (tap on 100% and screen suddenly becomes much brighter), and the other way around, switching to night mode doesn't go to set value but it's far above it. This might coincide with turning on / off carlink or tapping on brightness, as this Dudu bug sometimes resolves by itself.
@DUDU-Meng is that bug known to you? If not I'm fine with submitting bug report.

Die Umschaltung zwischen hell und dunkel funktioniert nicht immer.
Vor allem wenn man durch eine Allee fährt und das Licht zweimal oder dreimal angeht, reagiert die Umschaltung nicht mehr. Es bleibt dann dunkel oder hell, oder es dreht sich um. Licht an, Display hell, Licht aus, Display dunkel.
Bisher ist keine Besserung in Sicht und es scheint DUDUAUTO nicht wirklich zu interessieren.
Und vor Allem ist das Display auch mit der sogenannten extrem dunklen Einstellung noch immer viel zu hell und auch das interessiert DUDUAUTO nicht.
Würde es sie interessieren, würden sie nach Lösungen suchen wie z. B. eine neue Display Technologie.
Das Radio kostet eh schon fast 800 Euro von daher zahlen die Leute auch 1000 oder 1200 Euro für etwas besseres.

JhonnyD I agree, they aren't really interested. This has been going since over a year, and even if we gave them some options (to lower the PWM), at some point they become ghosting the requests.
I suppose they just use random screens, whatever is cheaper at the moment, hence that's why the brightness settings aren't repeatable with users, some could lower to zero (blank), some screens were flashing etc.,so they blocked the brightness below 17% PWM.
I agree, from 500€ headunit, I would expect more refinement, proper audiophile audio path. Not a €150 headunit with fancy OS. As someone said "pig with lipstick is still a pig at the end of the day".
About quality... This is screenshot from mekede promo video on YT about screen assembly. It's quite... Contradicting everything what I know and was taught about working with ICs, electrostatic discharges etc. No gloves, no bracelet, just a garage style assembly and touching PCB everywhere?
